Smith Machine Reverse Calf Raises

BeginnerBarbellMachine

This reverse raise flips the usual movement, lifting the toes toward the shins to train the muscles on the front of the lower leg. Standing with heels on a raised platform gives you a fuller range of motion. The Smith machine keeps the bar path fixed so you can load up safely.

How to do it

  1. 1

Set the Smith machine bar to just below shoulder height.

  2. 2

Stand on a platform with your feet hip-width, heels on top and the balls of your feet hanging off.

  3. 3

Rest the bar across your upper back and unhook it to stand tall.

  4. 4

Pull your toes up toward your shins by flexing at the ankles.

  5. 5

Keep your hips stacked over your heels as you reach the top.

  6. 6

Lower your toes back down under control.
