CALVES

Seated Dumbbell Calf Raise

BeginnerDumbbell

Sitting down for this raise removes the balance demand, so all your focus goes into working the calves hard. Holding a dumbbell over each knee lets each side carry its own load, which stops a stronger leg from covering for a weaker one. Good for building calf size while keeping both legs honest.

How to do it

  1. 1

Sit on a bench with a weight plate on the floor a foot or so in front of you.

  2. 2

Set the balls of both feet on the plate with your knees bent near ninety degrees and heels hanging free.

  3. 3

Rest a dumbbell on top of each thigh, keeping them off your kneecaps.

  4. 4

Let your heels sink below the plate to feel a stretch through the calves.

  5. 5

Press through the balls of your feet to lift the dumbbells and squeeze the calves at the top.

  6. 6

Lower back down slowly, keeping tension the whole way.
