Dumbbell Squat
A squat variation using a pair of dumbbells racked at the shoulders instead of a barbell. The free weights give you more freedom of movement, which suits people with mobility limits, while the added instability helps sharpen your squat pattern for heavier lifts later.
How to do it
- 1
Set your feet just outside shoulder width with your toes turned out slightly.
- 2
Clean a dumbbell up to each shoulder, palms facing in and elbows pointing forward.
- 3
Spread your weight evenly across both feet.
- 4
Start the descent by sending your hips back.
- 5
Keep your knees tracking over your second toe and your core braced with a flat spine.
- 6
Sink as deep as you can while staying neutral, then stand back up to the start.
