Sumo Deadlift High Pull

IntermediateBarbell

A compound lift that fuses a wide sumo deadlift with an upright high pull, so the barbell travels from the floor to chin height in one move. It fires up the legs, glutes, back, shoulders, and arms, building explosive strength and conditioning when done at pace.

How to do it

  1. 1

Stand in a wide stance with toes turned out and the bar about an inch from your shins.

  2. 2

Hinge at the hips and bend your knees, letting your shins come forward, to grip the bar overhand.

  3. 3

Keep a neutral spine and press through your heels to pull the bar up your body.

  4. 4

As it clears mid-thigh, explode through hips, knees, and ankles and pull the bar to shoulder height with your elbows above it.

  5. 5

Lower the bar back to your waist under control, then return it to the floor.
